Calhan School District (CSD), a school district in Colorado, announced it has adopted ZeroEyes’ artificial intelligence-powered gun detection platform to bolster safety across all of its schools.
According to the company, the system uses AI to identify illegally brandished guns using existing security cameras and will support CSD’s broader effort to reduce response times during threats.
If a weapon is detected, images are instantly sent to ZeroEyes’ 24/7 Operations Center, where military and law enforcement veterans verify threats and alert responders in as little as three to five seconds. The detection system is the first of its kind to receive a full Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act Designation, which aims to validate anti-terrorism technology.
“While we are incredibly fortunate to have a close partnership with our local law enforcement, we know that in situations where every second counts, technology like ZeroEyes can make all the difference,” Donovan Mitchell, superintendent of CSD, said in a statement.
The decision to adopt the technology comes amid growing concerns over gun violence, according to ZeroEyes. The company said its ZeroEyes Gun Violence Research Center recorded over 120 gun-related incidents in Colorado in the past year alone.
The company was founded by former Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL) Teams personnel and technologists, who said they also provide training and consulting to help districts like Calhan prepare for active shooter scenarios.
“Our goal is to ensure teachers can teach and students can learn without worrying about their safety,” said Mitchell. “We hope we never face a gun-related threat on our campus, but if we do, we want to have as many systems in place as possible to combat it – and ZeroEyes is a key part of that.”
