As generative AI capabilities reshape cloud technologies, GovRAMP has launched a new AI Security Task Force aimed at strengthening cybersecurity and trust standards for AI-powered cloud solutions used by public sector organizations.

Indianapolis-based GovRAMP – which rebranded earlier this year from its original StateRAMP name – provides a standardized approach for state and local governments to assess and authorize cloud services and ensure that they meet specific security requirements.

With AI introducing new cybersecurity risks, GovRAMP said its latest initiative is designed to proactively address emerging threats and maintain secure adoption pathways for public sector technology.

The new AI Security Task Force is bringing together public and private sector representatives who will collaborate to identify AI-specific risks and recommend updates to GovRAMP’s Security Program. The task force will guide how AI-enabled cloud products are assessed and ensure that standards evolve alongside rapid technological change.

By aligning AI-specific security standards with established Federal frameworks like NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, GovRAMP said the initiative promises greater consistency, stronger protections, and easier pathways for agencies adopting AI-enhanced tools.

Strategic oversight for the task force will come from the GovRAMP AI Executive Council, which includes:

  • Laura Clark, chief information officer, Michigan;
  • Ryan Murray, chief information security officer, Arizona;
  • Dr. Craig Orgeron, chief information officer, Mississippi;
  • Tony Sauerhoff, chief information security officer, Texas;
  • Jason Snyder, chief information officer, Massachusetts;
  • Tarek Tomes, chief information officer, Minnesota; and
  • Nathan Willigar, chief information security officer, Maine

“GovRAMP has always operated at the intersection of innovation and trust,” said Leah McGrath, GovRAMP’s executive director. “The launch of the AI Security Task Force marks an important step toward equipping public sector organizations to adopt AI responsibly and securely.”
